in dublin on sunday night at around 10.30 saw a bright orange object travelling throught the sky roughly north to south almost directly overhead. it turned from from a bright big orange star into and indistinct fuzzy cloud like thing the further south it travelled. wondering did anyone else see it and what was it.

I’m new to astronomy, and on fri 3rd of sept I bought my first set of binoculars. A set of celestron skymaster 15×70. Leaving the AI store with my new purchase, I was like a kid at christmas, and the cloudless blue sky filled me with the anticipation of my first real star hopping. But doom and gloom. As darkness rolled in, so did the cloud.
Star-b-q day. But the cloud remained. Although the rest of the event was really good.
With no sign of cloud breaking I went home with my new binoculars having never left the boot of the car. Then at 1.30am on the N4 outside Mullingar the cloud broke. I slamed the breaks and dived into the hard-sholder. FINALLY out come the binoculars. There was no moon, so I picked the next biggest thing. Jupiter. Looking through the lenses for the first time I thought I could see a glared image. I looked away for a moment to rest my eyes. Looking the second time I relised it was’nt glare but the moons of jupiter. WOW, my jaw droped. And for that moment on the side of the road I felt like galileo.
It might sound funny now, but i’m glad we had that cloud. because it ment i got the feeling of discovering it for myself rather then having someone point it out for me.
I look forward to more jaw dorpping moments.
I have to say thankyou to everyone at Astronomy Ireland for there great advice and friendly nature. You really are a great bunch.
Looking forward to the next AI event.
